What followed were four consecutive weeks of treatment—local anesthetic needles pricking the gums, the high-pitched squeal of instruments against teeth, and long sessions of mouth-open fatigue.

But when the appointments finally ended, one thought wouldn’t leave him: No one should have to reach a breaking point before getting help.
